Welcome to Kioptrix Labs!
There’s a good chance you found this site the same way so many of us first met the word Kioptrix:
you were hunting for beginner-friendly vulnerable machines, or you saw someone on a forum say,
“Start with Kioptrix. If you can root those boxes, you’re on the right path.”
Kioptrix Labs exists for that moment.
This site is an independent, educational reboot inspired by the classic Kioptrix vulnerable VM series.
Our goal is simple:
Help you grow from “I don’t even know where to start”
to “I can calmly break, understand, and fix systems in a professional way.”
No drama, no gatekeeping—just clear, structured guidance for people who want to learn ethical hacking properly.
What Kioptrix Labs Is (and Isn’t)
Kioptrix Labs is:
- A learning hub for beginner and intermediate penetration testers
- A place to practice old-school techniques on classic vulnerable machines, then connect them to modern tools and methodologies
- A structured roadmap for OSCP / PNPT / other hands-on certifications
- A home for write-ups, lab notes, reporting workflows, and study systems built around the original Kioptrix spirit
Kioptrix Labs is not:
- A platform for real-world, unauthorized hacking
- A “copy-paste this exploit and you’re a hacker now” style site
- A replacement for official certification training or legal advice
Everything here is designed to be used in isolated labs, test environments, and systems you own or are explicitly allowed to test. The focus is education, not abuse.
Who This Site Is For
You’ll feel at home here if you are:
- A complete beginner who has heard of “ethical hacking” but doesn’t know where to start
- A developer or sysadmin who wants to understand how attackers think so you can defend better
- An OSCP / PNPT candidate looking for a structured lab plan instead of random boxes
- A career-changer trying to map out a realistic 12–18 month path into cybersecurity
- A curious person who enjoys breaking things in order to understand how to fix them
If you recognize yourself in any of these, Kioptrix Labs was built with you in mind.
What You’ll Find Inside
1. Kioptrix-Focused Learning Paths
We use the classic Kioptrix machines as a backbone for your early journey.
You’ll find:
- Beginner roadmaps: which box to start with, in what order, and why
- Ethical walkthroughs: not just “run this exploit,” but how to think, enumerate, and document like a real pentester
- Comparisons between Kioptrix and modern platforms (Hack The Box, TryHackMe, VulnHub, etc.), so you know how each lab fits into your bigger picture
2. Home Lab & Tooling Guides
We help you answer questions like:
- “How do I build a safe home lab without breaking my home network?”
- “Should I use VirtualBox, VMware, or something else?”
- “Why can’t my VM see the vulnerable machine, and how do I fix it?”
Expect step-by-step guides for:
- Virtualization setup
- Basic networking (NAT vs bridged, subnets, routing)
- Essential tools (nmap, Burp Suite, Kali basics, note-taking systems)
3. Reporting, Notes, and Professional Habits
Hacking is only half of the job. The other half is communication.
Kioptrix Labs gives you:
- Practical note-taking workflows for labs and exams
- Screenshot and reporting templates
- Guidance on how to turn your lab results into portfolio-ready case studies
These are the habits that make the difference between “someone who plays with CTFs” and
“someone a company will trust with their production systems.”
4. Certification & Career Guides
We don’t just drop acronyms and leave you alone.
You’ll see honest breakdowns of:
- Certification paths (OSCP, CEH, Security+, and more)
- Costs, study timelines, and realistic expectations
- Entry-level security roles you can pursue before becoming a full-time pentester
- Remote work, freelancing, and how to build a career that fits your life
Our goal is not to push you toward any single cert or bootcamp, but to help you choose wisely based on your budget, time, and learning style.
How to Use Kioptrix Labs
If this is your first time here, a simple starting path might be:
- Read the Beginner Roadmap
Get a high-level view of how Kioptrix fits into your learning journey. - Set Up Your Home Lab
Follow one of the lab setup guides and get your first vulnerable machine running safely. - Tackle Your First Kioptrix Box
Work through a beginner-friendly Kioptrix walkthrough, taking notes as you go.
Focus on understanding why each command is used. - Start a Habit of Documentation
Use our note and report templates to document what you tried, what worked, and what failed.
This will pay off massively when you move on to exams and real engagements. - Browse the Career & Certification Section
Once you know you enjoy the work, use those articles to design a longer-term plan.
You don’t have to rush. Consistent, focused practice beats a short burst of intensity every time.
Ethics, Legality, and Respect
The original Kioptrix project became beloved in the community because it gave people a safe place to fail, learn, and try again. Kioptrix Labs wants to carry that same spirit forward.
A few ground rules that this site assumes you agree with:
- You only test systems you own or have clear written permission to test.
- You respect the privacy, data, and infrastructure of others.
- You use what you learn here to make systems safer, not to cause harm.
If that aligns with your values, you’re exactly the kind of person we’re happy to have here.
A Final Note from the Editor
Most people who end up in cybersecurity remember a single machine, a single lab, or a single night where something finally clicked: the port scan, the misconfiguration, the shell.
For many, that memory has Kioptrix in it.
Kioptrix Labs is a quiet tribute to that experience and a practical guide for the people coming after us.
Whether you’re chasing a certification, a new job, or simply the joy of understanding how things really work under the surface, I hope this site gives you structure, clarity, and a bit of encouragement on the way.
Welcome to Kioptrix Labs.
Let’s learn security together—one carefully broken box at a time.
