Use a Kioptrix artifact as a specific example while keeping the full Security+ assessment scope separate. Start by naming the exam version you intend to take. A legacy VM is optional practice; completing it does not predict a Security+ result.
Jump to the version check or the coverage record. For a general choice of study activity, use the study planning worksheet.
Check the exam version before mapping practice
Official information checked October 23, 2026: CompTIA’s Security+ overview currently presents V7 as available and V8 as expected to launch on or around November 17, 2026. A planned launch is not a guarantee of availability on your chosen date. Verify the provider’s current instructions before booking or buying material.
| Version and code | Published timing | Planning action |
|---|---|---|
| V7 — SY0-701 | Currently available. Listed retirement: English June 11, 2027; Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Thai August 13, 2027. | Match materials, objectives, language and planned attempt/retake dates to this version. |
| V8 — SY0-801 | Expected launch on or around November 17, 2026; the page provides a V8 objective preview. | Use version-specific material and recheck final availability and candidate instructions. |
The previous SY0-701-only reference is not the whole version-planning picture. Do not assume a resource labeled only “Security+” covers the version or language you intend to use.
Name the question you want the lab to illustrate
Select a concept or task from the correct objective list, then define what artifact could help explain it. Examples might concern an observed service response, an access boundary or the difference between a proposed fix and verified remediation. These are possible study questions, not captured results from this page.
Keep any testing within the permitted environment
Confirm the intended target, allowed activity and actual network boundary before testing. Check relevant attachments and routes rather than relying on a private address or adapter name alone. Pause if permission, target identity or isolation is uncertain. Keep secrets out of shared notes.
Record the actual scope of the artifact
Name the Kioptrix release, task, environment and guidance used. An artifact can support an observation under its recorded conditions. It does not establish a complete exam objective, a passing score or performance in an unfamiliar scenario.
Separate an example from full objective coverage
Use CompTIA’s version-specific objective list as the coverage reference. A single local exercise does not establish knowledge or performance across all the topics and question formats in that assessment. Keep unmapped and partially covered objectives visible instead of forcing each one into the lab story.
For example, a service observation can support a discussion of exposure, but does not by itself demonstrate an organization’s risk process, identity design or recovery capability. Match the claim to the evidence rather than treating the word “security” as sufficient overlap.
Choose by the actual gap and constraints
Consider your planned date, available time, prerequisites and evidence still needed. A missing concept may call for instruction; an unclear observation may call for a bounded lab check or help. No fixed thirty-day cutoff makes a lab appropriate or inappropriate for everyone.
Keep personal motivation claims personal
You may find a task interesting or useful. Record that as your experience, not a demonstrated general effect on motivation, anxiety, memory or learning speed. This guide reports no controlled evidence that Kioptrix improves those outcomes.
Distinguish completion from assessment evidence
Watching a walkthrough, following a method with help, independently performing a task and answering an assessment item are different activities. Label what you actually did. A familiar solution or a single practice score does not establish every requirement of the chosen examination.
Build a schedule from your own requirements
The former mandatory seven-day sequence has been removed. Choose the next activity from a named gap and your available time. If an exercise cannot expose the relevant condition, select another appropriate task. A fixed duration or order is not required.
Copy a version-specific coverage record
Complete a record for the exact objective, not just a broad domain label.
Exam version / code / intended language: Planned attempt date / official availability or retirement checked: Objective source URL / revision / date accessed: Exact objective under review: Lab release / task / relevant conditions: Actual action and observation / artifact location: Guidance and resources used: Concept this artifact can illustrate: Claim not established by the artifact: Coverage: demonstrated under stated conditions / partial / not tested / unknown Other topic or question format still requiring work: Next study task / expected evidence: Actual result and next decision:
Use the record to choose the next evidence
Review whether the artifact addresses the objective’s actual wording and expected context. Where it does not, choose instruction, an appropriate exercise, scenario review or other relevant assessment practice. Do not claim that a lab example automatically transfers to every examination question.
For writing a bounded explanation, use the evidence-linked wording examples. For a new practice environment, use the coverage-gap record.
Recheck before extending the commitment
If your exam version, planned date or language changes, review the objective mapping and learning-material compatibility. Confirm actual purchase, voucher and retake terms directly before spending. If a technical task is blocked, ask for the help you need without a fixed waiting or attempt rule.
Version and practice questions
Is V8 already available?
At the source-check date, CompTIA describes it as expected on or around November 17, 2026. Recheck the linked official page rather than treating this dated note as live availability.
Does V8’s planned launch immediately retire V7?
The V7 page lists later retirement dates by language, shown above. Confirm those dates and your booking options directly.
Is Kioptrix a required prerequisite?
It is optional practice in this guide. Use the provider’s current requirements and recommendations when planning an exam attempt.
Choose the version, then map one artifact
Write the exam code and dated objective reference first. Identify the actual evidence and remaining gap before choosing another activity. For other tasks, browse Find a Guide.
Sources and review limits — October 23, 2026
The linked CompTIA overview, V7 and V8 pages were read for the codes, availability wording, planned launch and language-specific retirement dates. The practice mapping is editorial and not endorsed by CompTIA. Removed unsupported motivation, memory, contextual-encoding and learning-effect claims, fixed timing and mandatory study-order rules. No examination, learner study or new VM test was performed.
Kioptrix and Security+ coverage record
Use this when: you are a learner using a lab alongside a broader Security+ study plan. Copy the fields into your own notes. Record what is known, what remains uncertain and who will perform the next check.

Worksheet usability update — October 23, 2026: added an editable record and a download of its current contents. This does not verify the article’s sources or perform the lab exercise.
Next action: Use the lab as evidence for a specific concept rather than a substitute for the full assessment scope. Keep the supporting observation and its conditions beside the decision so that a later reader can distinguish an established result from a working explanation.
This is a blank practice or review record. It does not report a test performed by Kioptrix or certify learning outcomes. Add the actual conditions, observations and support used in your own work.
Related task: For separating laboratory goals from exam study, use Kioptrix Study Planning: Map Tasks to Evidence and Objectives. Keep that task distinct from the specific record above.
Worksheet change record — October 20, 2026
Added this kioptrix and security+ coverage record, four task-specific fields, a next action and a link to a distinct related task. Existing source notes keep their own review dates. This addition is not a new verification of every statement or a newly executed lab test.
